Comparing Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser Point Charts to Cash Pricing

There has been a lot of buzz lately on DVC Fan regarding early booking for Disney World’s much anticipated Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser. As Disney Vacation Club members, those eligible and annual passholders were invited to book early (October 7-9). The general public has to wait until October 28. For DVC members using this option, that meant that at least one person on the reservation had to be using qualifying points. Since this is considered a Disney Collection booking, points had to either be direct or resale that were grandfathered in. The resale points would need to be from before there was a minimum direct requirement to receive a blue card. This is much like using your points on Disney Cruise Line. We even saw the same stipulations for the Disney Vacation Club special Wish Voyage.

I have to admit, I was surprised by the amount of people booking this very expensive experience. I guess Disney really has tapped into the right fan base with this one. There is no real way to know how many of those booking were DVC members who used points. However, if you had a lot of qualifying points to burn from not being able to travel, this may have been a good way to use them. Because we always like to look at the numbers, let’s take a look at the Disney Vacation Club point charts for the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser and see how they stack up compared to cash prices.

What you get when you pay for the two-night “voyage” aboard the Starcruiser:

• 2-night stay in a cabin or suite
• Ongoing, immersive and interactive entertainment, where choices determine your experience*
• Food and beverages on the starcruiser (excluding alcoholic and specialty beverages) and a quick-service meal at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo or other select locations at Disney’s Hollywood Studios**
• Admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for your planetary excursion to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
• Valet parking
• Exclusive Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser databand (known on your home planet as a MagicBand)

On to the point charts…

As you can see, there are three room categories. The Galaxy Suite and Captain’s Suite are larger accommodations and therefore a lot more points. There are also few of them to begin with and they book up quickly. They were already sold out after the first day of booking for the available dates. Standard Cabin is probably where most of us would book. It is important to note that these point charts are per person.

Members who booked early through DVC had to book one person with points and could choose cash or points for the rest of the people in their room. Minimum points for one adult is 295 for most of the week days in August and September. On the high end, that same room will costs one adult 369 during some weekends in March and April. The points for the same room for a solo traveler were a lot more, ranging from 590-738 for a standard cabin.

Right now, Disney only has some sample cash pricing listed on their site. If you have specific dates you are looking for using cash, I highly recommend getting in touch with your friendly Dreams Unlimited Travel Agent.

Cash Pricing

As you can see from the image, cash pricing for most weeknights 8/20-9/17 is $1,209 per person for two guests in a cabin. These prices are listed as low as $749 with four guests per cabin. At least one of those guests has to be a child for that exact pricing. If we compare the two adults price to the point costs for a stay in a standard cabin 8/22, it will be 295 per adult in points or $1,209 per adult if paying cash. If you value your points around $15 per point, you are spending $4,425 per person in points. Divide that by four and you have $1,106.25, more than enough to take four people during that time using cash.

This is no surprise. We have always known that things like cruises and the Disney Collection are not the best use of points. It costs 14 points next Saturday if you were to use your them at All Star Movies under the Disney Collection. Most DVC resorts are 15-17 points that same night. DVC members are some of the most educated Disney fans I have ever met. They know this.

Points vs Cash

In the end, however you decide to spend your points is up to you. If you have a lot to use and you want to go this route, do what makes you happy. I am personally not a large enough Star Wars fan to even pay these cash prices. Maybe if there are some better deals in the future, we will find ourselves in a Galaxy Far Far Away. We could even rent our points to make this more attainable. Still, when I stack up the price for two nights on a Starcruiser, I realize that is money I could be saving for a Disneyland Tower contract. But we all have different priorities and that’s okay. I hope the Starcruiser experience is worth every penny for those spending their hard earned money to experience it.
