Pros & Cons of The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort

Murphy Bed - Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness

With all the excitement surrounding the newest DVC resort opening this year, The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort, we thought it would be helpful to breakdown some of the pros and cons of both owning here or just staying at the resort. Let’s dive into some of the important aspects you will want to know before deciding if Fort Wilderness is the DVC resort for you.

Pro: Sleeps up to Six

The new cabins will sleep up to six guests. That is more than any studio or one-bedroom villa. Sleeping options include a bedroom with both a queen bed that sleeps two and twin bunk beds that also sleep two. In the living area is a pull-down queen-sized Murphy for two additional guests.

Con: Lack of privacy inside

Because the cabins maintain the same footprint as before, the main bedroom contains both the queen bed and bunk beds. In addition to this, anyone using the restroom will have to pass through the living room, where additional guests could be sleeping.

Pro: No Wall Sharing with Neighbors

While inside you might have a lack of privacy amongst your own travel party, outside, you are more spaced out than a typical DVC resort hotel. Since the cabin is stand-alone, it does not share walls with any nearby villas. This likely means a quieter experience.

Cons: Evacuated for Hurricanes

Depending on the severity of the weather, Fort Wilderness has been known to fully evacuate the entire resort before a bad forecasted hurricane hits the area. Luckily, if you are staying in one of the cabins during this time, you will likely be moved to another resort. However, it might not be the trip you had planned.

Pro: Kitchen Amenities

Based on the concept art, there is a full kitchen space. This includes a stove, fridge, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, countertop space, likely dishes and cook wear, and a table that seats up to 6.

Con: No Washer/Dryer in Unit

Unfortunately, just like with the previous cabins, there is no in-room washer and dryer unit. Those wishing to wash clothes will have to head to a Comfort Station/Laundry area. There is one located near the pool in the cabin area.

Pro: Dog Friendly Options

This could be a con depending on how you look at it, but many are excited about the dog friendly option for DVC members. Not only is Fort Wilderness going to have a specific amount of cabins that allow guests to bring up to two dogs for an additional pet fee, the resort has other amenities for your pooch. Not only is there plenty of space to take a walk with your dog, but there is also the Waggin’ Trails Dog Park.

Con: No New Amenities

While the cabins are being replaced and turned into a Deluxe DVC Villas property, there have been no real plans announced to increase the amenities at this resort. For now, there continues to be the same two pools and the restaurants will remain what they are today (Hoop Dee Doo dinner show, Trails End quick service, food trucks, and a few snack stands).

Pro: Low Point Costs

The point charts for the cabins is very reasonable, especially considering the capacity and space. Starting at just 15 points per night and going up to a max of 36, these are cheaper than some one-bedrooms and also lower in costs than many studios.

Con: High Annual Dues

The annual dues for the cabins is another story. Coming in at a rumored $12.16 per point, this places Fort Wilderness as the DVC property with the second highest dues only after Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. We speculate on this reasoning some in our initial dues announcement for the cabins.

Pro: Boat to Magic Kingdom

Staying at Fort Wilderness means you are on the boat line that goes to Magic Kingdom. Taking a boat through Bay Lake and the Seven Seas Lagoon is always a fun way to travel.

Con: Mostly bus transportation including inner resort

If you are not renting a golf cart to get around the resort, you will likely be doing a lot of walking or using the inner bus loop. In addition to this, for Disney Springs and other parks aside from Magic Kingdom, you have to get to the front of the resort to board a bus for those locations. This can make transportation a little challenging at this resort.

Pro: Amazing Theming

I want to leave off on a pro, and this one is mostly opinion based. The newly designed cabins are beautiful and will have amazing Disney theming. In our opinion, they combine the rustic setting of Fort Wilderness with modern finishes. We can’t wait to experience this new Disney Vacation Club offering.

To buy there is so expensive on top of maintenance I can’t help but think Disneys gone to far in the pricing

Annual dues is crazy. Despite that, the washer/dryer is a huge deal for me.

These look really bland. At least the original cabins had that ‘rustic’ feel.
