One of Walt Disney World’s most classic attractions is about to get a historic update. During the “Creating the Happiest Place on Earth” panel at Destination D23, Walt Disney Imagineer Chris Beatty announced that Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom will soon feature a brand-new scene and a groundbreaking Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney himself.
What’s Changing in the Carousel of Progress?
For the first time since the attraction’s last update in the 1990s, Guests will see a refreshed opening sequence. Before following the familiar American family through four generations of innovation, visitors will be greeted by Walt Disney in Audio-Animatronics form, setting the stage for the story of progress and imagination that defined his legacy.

The Carousel of Progress was personally conceived by Walt Disney and debuted at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Since then, it has become one of the most-performed stage shows in history and a beloved Magic Kingdom staple since 1975.
Kirsten Komoroske, Executive Director of the Walt Disney Family Museum, celebrated the update, noting that Imagineering’s work ensures Walt’s vision continues to inspire new generations:
“The introduction of a new Audio-Animatronics figure of Walt Disney in ‘Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress’ marks an exciting milestone in our shared mission to celebrate the story of the man behind the magic.”
When Will the Update Debut?
Disney has not yet shared an opening date or details on how the family scenes may evolve, but Imagineers emphasized that the heart of the show will remain the same while introducing the attraction to a new generation of fans.
