Disney Vacation Club (DVC) has announced updates to its transfer rules, offering members greater flexibility and new options for using their points. Let’s dive into the changes and what they mean for you.
What’s Changed?
Under the updated rules, DVC now allows members to transfer banked points, borrowed points, Reservation Points, and Holding Points. This flexibility opens up new possibilities for planning vacations and collaborating with fellow members. Whether you’re helping friends book a larger villa or adjusting plans to make the most of your points, the new rules provide much-needed options.
What Are Transfer Points, and How Do They Work?
For those unfamiliar, transferring points means assigning some (or all) of your DVC points to another member. The points retain their original use year and home resort booking rights, and both parties must be current on their annual dues and financial obligations. Transferred points can be banked or borrowed, and you can only participate in one transfer per use year (either as giver or receiver).
To give you an example, Amy, our friends Dan and Jeff, and I often transfer points back and forth for shared accommodations. For runDisney race weekends, we typically trade points for 2-Bedroom villas, ensuring everyone contributes fairly without requiring out-of-pocket compensation.
Prohibited Transfers: No Commercial Activity Allowed
It’s crucial to highlight a key rule outlined in Section K of the updated guidelines: DVC Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for transfers. While some resale or rental companies attempt to sell transfer points, this practice violates Disney’s policies. Legitimate transfers should only be used for personal purposes, like helping friends or family members with their bookings.
The full language from the Multi-Site Public Offering Statement (POS) states:
“Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity.”
Benefits of the New Transfer Flexibility
The ability to transfer banked, borrowed, Reservation, and Holding Points means more options for managing your membership. Imagine having leftover Holding Points from a last-minute cancellation—now, you can transfer them to a friend instead of letting them go to waste. Or perhaps you have borrowed points you won’t use; transferring them to a family member might be the perfect solution.
Additionally, this update benefits members planning large group trips. For example, one member can book a villa using points transferred from a friend, streamlining the booking process and ensuring everyone has a comfortable stay.
Practical Applications and Limitations
While these changes are undoubtedly positive, some important limitations remain. Members can still only complete one transfer per use year (unless the transfer is for an External Exchange reservation or is a transfer within one’s own membership between Use Years). Transferred points cannot be returned to the original owner, and DVC will not assist in finding members to facilitate transfers.
I view Disney Vacation Club’s recent transfer rule changes a win for members, allowing us to use our points more effectively and collaborate with others. Whether you’re planning a big family reunion, helping friends, or optimizing points for future vacations, these updates open the door to more possibilities.

January 7, 2025What is transferring within one’s own membership between use years? I have 2 account numbers, one with April use year and the other September. Can I transfer between the two without limitation? I assume they keep their existing priority so is there any reason to do this besides within 7 months? Thanks for any clarification

January 7, 2025This is primarily done to better combine points within the 0-7 Month Booking Window as you outlined. Whereas there’s a limit to one transfer per year otherwise, there is no limit to these types of transfers.

January 7, 2025Would this still apply if it is different resorts? (ie. I have AKL April use year and BLT June use year, all re-sale). Would I have unlimited transfers or just one per year?

January 7, 2025This past weekend I was set up for 1 night at Saratoga and 2 at Old Key. The day before something opened at Old Key for arrival night. I went from 15 to 14 points knowing the 1 point would go in holding. I didn’t care. Worth not switching resorts.
I’m not going again until June. I have a March use year. Any ideas of where I could transfer the 1 point?
Like I said , ultimately I don’t care and it’s only 1 point.
BTW I saw Panda at breakfast today. I said hi and told him to tell you all to keep up the good work.
