Comparing Universal’s Stella Nova With Disney Resorts

Are you a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) member thinking of venturing beyond Disney for your next trip? You’re not alone! With Universal’s new park, Epic Universe, generating buzz, we decided to compare Universal’s Stella Nova and Disney Resorts to help you decide if branching out is worth it.

Whether you’re all about theming, amenities, or value, we’ve outlined the key differences in this easy-to-read guide for Disney fans curious about Universal’s offerings.

1. Pricing

One of the standout features of Universal’s Stella Nova is the price tag. Classified as a Prime Value resort within Universal’s hotel collection, the pricing for Stella Nova is competitive with Disney’s Value resorts. For some perspective, we paid $137 per night (before taxes and fees) at Stella Nova, which is comparable to resorts like Disney’s Pop Century.

However, it’s important to consider additional fees. Universal resorts, including Stella Nova, charge for nightly parking, and we paid an extra $30 per night to park our car. This may come as a surprise since perks like free parking are included when staying at a Disney resort.

Verdict: Stella Nova is a solid choice for budget-conscious travelers who appreciate Value-level stays. However, keep parking fees in mind when calculating the total cost.

2. Theming

Theming is a top priority for Disney regulars, so how does Stella Nova measure up? Good news! Stella Nova offers a space theme that’s both creative and fun. It pairs well with its sister resort, Terra Luna, for a cohesive galactic vibe.

While Disney fans may be accustomed to highly immersive theming found at Moderate and Deluxe resorts (think Wilderness Lodge’s soaring totem poles or artful tributes like Port Orleans), Stella Nova’s design is still impressive for a resort in the Value category. You’ll notice thoughtful touches throughout the property that make it feel playful yet modern.

Verdict: If you’re craving Disney-level theming, Stella Nova won’t quite match the intricate details of a Deluxe or Moderate resort. However, for a Value price point, the theme is well executed and enjoyable.

3. Amenities

Stella Nova holds its own when it comes to amenities. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Pool and Pool Bar: Perfect for relaxing in between park days.
  • Quick-Service Restaurant: Offers a variety of dishes to suit all taste buds.
  • Lobby Bar & Gift Shop: Convenient spots to grab a drink or Universal-themed souvenirs.
  • Shuttle Services: Hop on a free shuttle to Universal’s Parks and CityWalk.
  • Walkability to Epic Universe: This is the game-changer! Stella Nova is within walking distance to Universal’s brand-new park, Epic Universe, set to be a must-visit destination.

Disney resorts also shine in the amenities department, but walking distance to a major theme park is typically reserved for Deluxe-level resorts like the Grand Californian at Disneyland Resort or Beach Club at Walt Disney World.

Verdict: Stella Nova’s proximity to Epic Universe gives it a unique edge. Plus, the variety of amenities ensures you won’t feel like you’re sacrificing comfort.

4. Rooms

Stella Nova’s rooms are exactly what you’d hope for in a Value category hotel. They’re clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed with plenty of storage, ample device charging, a mini fridge, and a coffee maker (necessary for those early park mornings!).

Compared to Disney’s Value resort rooms, Stella Nova feels modern and functional. However, rooms at Disney Moderate or Deluxe resorts offer more immersive details and higher-end touches that appeal to families and Disney fanatics alike.

Verdict: If you’re accustomed to Value accommodations, Stella Nova’s rooms will meet your needs while feeling fresh and stylish.

5. Location and Convenience

Here’s the kicker for DVC members considering staying at Stella Nova. This resort offers unmatched convenience for Universal enthusiasts. Its walking distance to Epic Universe means you can maximize your park hours without relying solely on shuttles or ride shares. And staying at any Universal hotel gives you access to the early park entry benefit (1 hour early). However, it is further from the other two Universal Parks.

Disney resorts, while spread across Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom areas, prioritize convenience with perks like early theme park entry, complimentary transportation, and proximity to attractions within the Disney bubble.

Verdict: Looking to explore Universal? Stella Nova’s location, especially if you’re excited about Epic Universe, makes it incredibly convenient. But keep in mind, Disney’s overall transportation and proximity perks likely provide a more seamless experience for DVC members staying onsite.

Final Thoughts

For DVC members considering a change of pace, Stella Nova offers excellent value, well-rounded amenities, and a fresh, fun theme that’s a breath of fresh air for Universal visitors. While it may not reach the same level of immersive theming as Disney Moderate or Deluxe resorts, it still delivers a memorable cost-effective stay for families or solo travelers eager to explore Universal Studios and the highly anticipated Epic Universe.

Great review! We stayed there during the Epic preview. The room was nice. For additional theme details on the 3rd floor I believe the ceiling had Star lighting effects. The pool was nice the hot tub is more like a pool it was HUGE! While we were there the heater was not working so the Hot in tub was not in effect. We walked to the park, that was nice. At the end of the night the bus was there waiting to take us back.
