At Destination D23 this weekend, Disney Imagineers shared an exciting sneak peek at the creative process behind the highly anticipated Villains Land at Magic Kingdom. First announced last year by Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, the new land is anticipated to feature two attractions, dining, and shopping – all themed to Disney’s most iconic villains.
Designing a Land Where Villains Come to Life
Imagineers Wyatt Winter and Caroline May explained that the vision for the land is to create a place where Guests can interact with villains in a playful, larger-than-life way. The design embraces dramatic lighting, bold environments, and a deep focus on the personality of each villain, drawing directly from their animated origins.

Disney Legend Andreas Deja, the animator behind characters like Scar, Jafar, and Gaston, is also consulting on the project to ensure authenticity in capturing each villain’s larger-than-life presence.
The Inspiration Behind Villains Land
To bring this darkly magical world to life, Imagineers looked beyond animation and into real-world design. Their research led them to Paris and Barcelona, where they studied Art Nouveau and Modernisme architecture.
- Paris: swirling, nature-inspired motifs that appear “cursed,” as if frozen by a spell.
- Barcelona: bold, otherworldly designs that feel unnerving and dreamlike.

By combining these influences with the jewel tones and dramatic flair of Disney villains, Imagineers coined the term “Conjured Architecture” – a unique design style blending art history with fantasy.
What to Expect When Villains Land Opens
While most details remain under wraps, the land promises to immerse Guests in an environment that feels both beautiful and sinister, amplifying the villains’ personalities through design, atmosphere, and interactivity.
