Walt Disney Imagineering has shared new behind-the-scenes details about Otter Springs at the Wetlands, one of the themed pool areas coming to Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge.
In the latest episode of Pardon Our Pixie Dust, Imagineers offered a look at several projects currently in development, including the work taking place on the new Disney Vacation Club resort. One of the highlights was a closer look at the installation of Addy and Bonnie, two oversized otter sculptures that will become a centerpiece of the Otter Springs wet play area.
Meet Addy and Bonnie at Otter Springs
Daniel Trent, Associate Show Set Designer with Walt Disney Imagineering, walked viewers through the process of bringing the two otters to life.
Addy and Bonnie were inspired by a creative sketch influenced by Pocahontas, with the final designs leaning into the natural, rustic aesthetic expected throughout Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge.
The sculptures are designed to look as though they are made from carved wood, but they are actually constructed using fiberglass-reinforced plastic, or FRP. That material gives Imagineers the ability to create the detailed wood-like appearance while making the structures durable enough for use in a heavily trafficked aquatic environment.
The Otters Will Double as Water Slides
Addy and Bonnie are more than decorative figures.
The giant otters will feature built-in water slides, making them interactive elements within the Otter Springs wet play space. Their placement in the Wetlands pool area should help give the area a distinct identity while continuing the nature-focused storytelling that has been central to what we’ve seen from Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge so far.
For DVC Members following construction of the resort, details like these are beginning to provide a clearer picture of how Disney is approaching the recreational spaces. Rather than treating the pool area as a generic resort amenity, Imagineering appears to be building recognizable characters and story elements directly into the experience.
Another Look at the Theming Coming to Disney Lakeshore Lodge
Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge continues to take shape as one of the most closely watched upcoming Disney Vacation Club projects.
The newly revealed Otter Springs details show the level of design work going into even the resort’s smaller recreational features. Addy and Bonnie may ultimately become some of the more memorable visual elements around the Wetlands pool, particularly for families using the wet play area.
As construction continues, we’ll be watching for additional looks at Otter Springs, the Wetlands, and the other themed spaces planned for Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge.
