July 17, 2023When discussing DVC with my friends (who all live outside Florida/California) I use these questions to determine if DVC is a possible fit. A no on either question is a red flag.
1) Do you go to Disney at least every other year?
2) Can you schedule a vacation at least 7 months in advance?
If the answer to 1) is no, then just rent DVC points for when you go. Yes, you could stretch this to every 3 years but you really, REALLY, need to plan ahead and hope nothing happens the year you plan to go.
If the answer to 2) is no, DVC might still work for you but you should not buy into expensive, popular resorts; you might not be able to book them after 7 months depending on when you go. Learn to love SSR and either drive to Disney or rent a car.

July 17, 2023We’ve been DVC members since 1994. When we first joined, people on the message boards were saying I was crazy. Well, back in 1994 the DVC prices were a fraction of what they are now. Even with the maintenance fees, we’re still paying less than if we booked a trip without DVC. Plus, we’re in a suite and not a small cramped hotel room. The cost of going anywhere (not just Disney World) on vacation will continue to increase. With DVC, my wife and I can go to places. We’ve also used our membership to go to Hawaii. The best part? Our daughters will be able to take their family on vacations as well. In fact, we’re taking them along with our two granddaughters this January to Disney World.
What John Scott said in his post is good advice. I might add one thing. Never look at a DVC membership as an investment. Think of a DVC membership as a guarantee you and your family will be able to afford a nice vacation. Like I said, the price of a vacation will continue to get higher. Take Disney World as an example. We bought into DVC in 1994 and have never regretted it. I’ll tell people the three things we purchased over the years and feel we’re getting our money’s worth. The lawn sprinkler system, a stand alone whole house generator, and our DVC membership.
