Another longtime piece of nighttime entertainment at Disney’s BoardWalk is coming to an end. Beginning October 1, Atlantic Dance Hall will no longer offer its regular weekend operations, Disney has confirmed.
The nightclub has historically offered a place for guests ages 21 and older to dance along to music on select evenings, most recently operating from approximately 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. on weekends.
Disney shared the following update:
“Beginning Oct. 1, Atlantic Dance Hall will end its regular weekend operations. Atlantic Dance Hall will continue to be available for private events through Disney Meetings & Events and Disney Fairy Tale Weddings.”
So while the venue itself isn’t disappearing, its days as a regularly operating BoardWalk nightlife destination are coming to an end.
What Happens to Atlantic Dance Hall Next?
For now, Disney appears committed to maintaining Atlantic Dance Hall as a private-event venue. Disney Meetings & Events currently promotes the approximately 13,000-square-foot location as an event space capable of accommodating as many as 450 guests, which helps explain why Disney may see value in keeping the building available even without regular public operations.
Still, it’s hard not to wonder what this means for the long-term future of this corner of Disney’s BoardWalk.
We recently talked about the upcoming Hurly-Burly on an episode of The DVC Show and what that new addition could mean for the BoardWalk as Disney continues refreshing the area. Atlantic Dance Hall has always been something of an unusual operation. Depending on when you visited, you might walk inside and find an almost completely empty dance floor, perhaps occupied only by Jeff Haslam, or encounter a surprisingly busy evening when a convention or large group was staying nearby.
That inconsistency has made the future of Atlantic Dance Hall a frequent topic of conversation for us over the years.
I’m actually somewhat surprised Disney plans to continue using the building exclusively for meetings, events, and weddings. Clearly, there must be enough demand for the venue to justify keeping it available, and its size makes it a unique option for private functions at the resort.
But this is also some incredibly valuable real estate sitting directly along Crescent Lake.
Could Something New Eventually Come to This Part of the BoardWalk?
To be clear, Disney has announced nothing beyond the change in Atlantic Dance Hall’s regular operations. That won’t stop me from dreaming.
For years, I’ve wondered whether this entire section of the BoardWalk could someday become part of a larger expansion of Disney’s BoardWalk Resort. A new Disney Vacation Club tower incorporating the Atlantic Dance Hall site and some of the surrounding property has long been one of my personal “what if?” ideas.
There’s absolutely no indication that anything like that is currently planned, and Atlantic Dance Hall will continue hosting private events for the foreseeable future. But with regular weekend operations now ending, it becomes even more interesting to watch what Disney ultimately decides to do with such a prominent waterfront location.
For now, Atlantic Dance Hall isn’t going away entirely. It just won’t be the late-night weekend dance spot that BoardWalk guests (or Jeff) have known for years.
