Disney Vacation Club Extends Point Expiration Dates Due to Closure

Top of the World Lounge

Earlier this afternoon, Terri Schultz, Senior Vice President of Disney Vacation Club, sent an email to all DVC Members to convey more information as they prepare to welcome guests back later in June

In her message, Schultz conveyed further operational adjustments that were being implemented as part of the resorts reopening. These include enhanced cleaning measures, including specific adjustments to cleaning for appliances and dishware in Disney Vacation Club villas. High traffic areas will see increased cleaning and sanitization, as well as new hand-sanitizing stations in various key areas throughout the resorts. Physical distancing will also be implemented in public spaces, including restaurants, pools, shopping areas, and more.

DVC Members and guests will be asked to wear face coverings in all public areas of the resorts. Those visiting will also be encouraged to utilize online check-in and use cashless payment options as much as possible.

Schultz confirmed in her message that no reopening plans have been determined at this time for The Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa as well as Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina Hawai’i.

Perhaps the most notable part of this message was that Disney Vacation Club would be extending their temporary policies regarding expiring vacation points:

  • “April, June and now August, September and October 2019 Use Year points that are set to expire in 2020 and that were used for reservations during the closure period will be extended for one year from the current expiration date.”
  • “April, June and now August, September and October 2018 Use Year points that were banked into 2019 Use Years and used for these reservations will now all expire November 30, 2020.”
  • “This temporary policy only includes expiring points that were used to book a stay arriving between March 12 and the end of the closure period and that involve a reservation cancelled after February 29.”

Terri Schultz concluded her message with the following:

“All of us at Disney Vacation Club thank you, not only for your patience and understanding but for the many well wishes we’ve received during our closure. The reopening of these resorts is an encouraging step forward, and our Cast couldn’t be happier to welcome you home. To borrow words from a familiar tune, there’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, and tomorrow is just a dream away!”

This news is breaking, and updates will be posted as they are received. Stay tuned to DVC Fan, the DVC Fan Facebook Group, and The DIS for more information as it becomes available!

Hello DVC, does this extension apply to RCI reservations that were made for November? I need to use or loose my RCI points by December. Given Covid 19 Pandemic, we are not sure if travel would be advisable. Please advise. Thank you Lou Caruso

Hey Lou – I’ve not heard about RCI yet. Will let you know if/when we do!

I’ve still not seen my scenario addressed in any of the communications from DVC. Please let me know if you have any insight. I have 78 August use year points in holding from a cancelled February reservation. They were initially borrowed 2020 use year points. I’ve had four reservations scheduled so far to use them under the holding rules, currently for June 20-22, which just misses the reopening.

Any idea what happens to these points under the new rules? Are they still going to expire on 8/1? Or do I have an extra year or until November to use them (and if so, still with the holding restrictions)? Or will they be returned to the original use year (since they were borrowed 2020 points)? I’m guessing that since they went into holding in February, at best they are locked into being treated like 2019 points, but I haven’t seen anything that addresses this situation. I’m afraid my only option is to use them in July. Am I missing something?

Re: 2018 points banked to 2019 and extended to Nov 30, 2020: any info on deadlines to book and travel with those? Typically there would be the 2 months ahead blocked window.

Are you referring to holding rules? It’s my understanding these would be free to book with as usual per standard booking rules.

Hello, FYI. I booked my last opportunity to use my RCI points due to be used by 12/31/20. If I cannot use them due to Covid-19, can I have an extension. I do not want to loose my points due to restrictions of the Pandemic. Please advise. Thank you Lou Caruso

Lou – I have unfortunately not heard how RCI is treating this. You may need to reach out to them directly and/or Member Services for guidance. Sorry!
